National certification accreditation

Wonder if there is an update on the CCDS certification being recognized by a National certification accreditation agency (eg. Accredition Board for Specialty Nursing Certification [ABSNC] or National Commission for Certifing Agencies [NCCA])?

I know this has been out there before and there are criteria to be met to achive the recognitions but wanted to see if there is anymore news on this.

The reason for my question-- For Nurses-- having a current national nursing certification that is attained, maintained or renewed during the licensure renewal cycle and is in the nurse's area of practice, meets the requierement for continued competence and Nursing Liscense renewal. This would be benificial for those RN-CDS out there.

Thanks, Debbie S

  • oops :) This may not apply to all Board of Nursing criteria-- it does apply to Texas.

  • I don't know the answer, but I am wondering since you don't have to be an RN to earn your CCDS (can be a coder) if it will ever happen. Nursing is notoriously finicky about accepting work done outside nursing's purview (witness the non-nursing BA/BS).

Maybe I'm behind the times. I hope so.

Just as a FYI, ACMA offers a certification in case management for social workers and RN's. The RN certification is recognized, but they do have separate exams for each profession. I hope we would not have to go that route for recognition.

Does anyone have a career ladder for documentation specialist? Our facility has a clinical advancement program for staff nurses. Our CDI program is under care mgmt., The dept. is considering developing one for case mgmt as a whole, cdi included. (not sure if that's the best way) If anyone has an educational/career ladder for cdi only and willing to share, please send to my email.
