Acute pulmonary edema is included in the left ventricular failure code (I50.1) since there is an excludes note at J81.0 to not use with I50.1.
However there is no excludes note for I51.81 (Takotsubo Syndrome). Is that because Takotsubo is generally transient with causes other than organic heart disease?
With the pulmonary edema code, I get 286. Without it, I get 287.
I would code the acute pulmonary edema for DRG 286.
Interested in knowing how the CDI specialists feel about this.
