Bronchoscopy

If we are talking about removal of FB, as in aspiration of mucous plug, the sites mentioned are the choices. If the specific location is not documented, then left, right, bilateral NOS are available. You must know laterality to code even the NOS code.

If it is a BAL, there is no NOS choice and location must be documented.

Personally I don't think an account needs to held for more definitive location as long as you have the laterality info.

Hi! We are being asked to query for location of areas aspirated during bronchscopy because coding says they needs the specific location such as:

-Carina

-Lingula bronchus

-Lower lobe bronchus R/L

-Lower lung lobe R/L

-Lung lingula

-Main bronchus R/L

-Middle lobe bronchus R

-Middle lung lobe R

-Trachea

-Upper lobe bronchus R/L

-Upper lung lobe R/L

-Lung R/L (not further specified)

-Lung bilateral (not further specified)

-Other (specify)

Anyone else having this issue? We are actually holding a couple of accounts for the specificity even though it does not impact the DRG or SOI/ROM. Thoughts? Thanks!

  • How about just aspiration of secretions?
