Question

I have a patient who was admitted after a fall. The physician documented "hematoma of left hip". The patient had a drop in hemoglobin to 5.5 requiring transfusions. Her stools were negative for occult blood. Physician writes "Normocytic anemia". I am querying for anemia specificity. I am having difficulty coding the hematoma. When I spoke with the nurse, the hematoma is massive, and the physician actually feels that the hematoma was the cause of the drop in hemoglobin.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
