How do you determine attending MD?

Our HI department is struggling with a consistent way to assign
attending MD status, especially since we now have a robust hospitalist
service. Can any of you, especially our coder colleagues, provide any
insight? Thanks.

    I believe we assign the admitting physician as the physician of record. We have one in the ER who screens the admissions- will sometimes do the H&P. If not him one of the mid-levels may dictate the H&P.

    I will double-check this info. if it is different I will update.
