Acute respiratory failure and VBGs

Hey all,

We have had a question come up. Most patients in our facility are receiving VBGs instead of ABGs unless they are in critical care and I had a doctor tell me that he didn't feel he could diagnose acute respiratory failure from a VBG reading. Is there a difference in criteria for VBGs than there is for ABGs? In the CDI pocket guide and everywhere that I have looked it states ABG values, not VBG. And if so, does anyone have what the VBG criteria would be? Thank you for any help you can give!
