secondary hypercoaguable state secondary to afib

Hi,

I wondered if anyone else queries for this...am a little confused by a recent education sharing this as a query opportunity. I think it may have originated from a provider HCC presentation? Where I find it confusing... If Afib causes increased chance of clot...it seems more mechanical and then is it really hypercoaguable state? which codes to other thrombophilia (cc). Does that sound accurate to call it hypercoaguable state? I did find one article that may support more than the mechanical aspect : http://www.uptodate.com/contents/mechanisms-of-thrombogenesis-in-atrial-fibrillation
... but then I wonder... even if that were true... would it not be considered inherent to all atrial fibrillation? And if that is so, how can a condition inherent to atrial fibrillation be coded as a separate condition? I thought that went against coding guidelines....? OR is there a way to distinguish/justify asking that question- does it apply to certain cases of atrial fibrillation? if so what would you look for?

Thanks,
Ann
