Attempted/Aborted procedure

Team,
I have a situation where our Cardiologist attempted to use the Impella device. This device costs our facility about $150,000.00 to open the package. The physician was unable to place the device in the femoral artery. Therefore, an intra-aortic balloon pump was placed.

My question is can we bill for the use of the device. The DRG will go to the cardiac hierarchy of the intra-aortic balloon pump. I am not sure about the coding guidelines for the attempted use. It wasn't just a failed procedure because the device could not be cannulated into the femoral artery due to a previous graft in the area.

We haven't had this happen before with the Impella device. Please offer any advice you can so we can code correctly. I really would appreciate your input Dr. Gold.

Thanks everyone. I always appreciate you all sharing your knowledge and expertise.

Many thanks,
Syndi
