Physician query response rate

Just wondering what the benchmark is for other facilities regarding the expected physician query response rate. We have been following 3M reccomendation of an 80% physician response rate but have had difficulty getting there. It has been decided that the physician response rate will be our departments PI focus project for this coming year but before we finalize the details wanted some feedback from other facilities as to what is a reasonable physician response rate. Thanks!

    Kelley,

Our program is nearing the 3 year mark. We have about 99% response rate.

This is accomplished by face to face follow-up if the query if not answered within 24 hours of placement.

Our policy (determined by CDIS and HIM director) allows 48 hours post discharge to get the query answered.

Ours is 80% or greater BUT....you have those physicians that always respond and those that never respond We recently got a Director of Medicine so we hope that will change our response rate We do alot of education to keep it @ 80% or > It's never been higher than 87% in 10 years but we keep hoping and working toward a better goal You need physician champions, advisors and administrative support to be successful Don't shoulder all the blame if you don't have those 3 ingredients

  • Kelley,

    Are you a teaching Hospital?

  • Yes, we are a teaching hospital. That has only been in place for about 4-5 years. Our program has been in place for about 3 years. Although it feels like we are just starting. Originally our 4 person team was under 2 different deparments and as of 2010 we are now all under HIM. Since the change, things have been much better but we still have a long way to go. Our goal is to have 80% response rate and i think since we have yet to meet this, administration is wondering what are other facilities goal.

  • Our response rate is >95%. What they don't answer while the patient is in house has be to answered after discharge. Every one in a while we let one go. We get them one way or another.

No, we are owned by the county and managed by a larger corporation things move slowly here @ times

  • We are a 450 bed teaching hospital and our response rate goal is >80% per 3M recommendations, we are currently at 95% for this year. As for queries asked, yes we do ask more than one on a chart, 2 or 3 sometimes if DRG and or SOI/ROM will be affected.
    Thanks,
    Amy
