need help with proceedure - which should drive this drg
I have a patient who came in for a scrotal abscess. The patient went to the OR and had an excisional debridement as well as some excision of the scrotal tissue. The patient also had Fournier gangrene. Our question is this - 3M took us to the excisional debridement as the driving procedure and not the excision of scrotal tissue. What does everyone think about this. We saw no coding clinic that this couldn't be done this way. Thanks for any input.

Just off the top of my head, I would think that the excisional debridement would drive this DRG as it is the more extensive of the procedures. Do you have a current DRG Expert book you could consult? I am curious, what are the DRG differences between the excisional debridement being the PPX vs the excision of scrotal tissue? Is the excision of the scrotal tissue a non-OR procedure?
