EPIC IN-BASKET
Hi everyone,
We are using EPIC now as our EHR, and the in-basket process was selected by our medical staff for physician clarifications. Not having a list of EPIC users, I wondered if any one has any EPIC in-basket procedures they would like to share or experience. Thanks in advance. Carla Heyn, RHIT, BS, CDS

- We only send electronic queries , both CDI and HIM
- queries are part of legal med record
- Queries show up in Epic inbox requiring attending MD response using MD addendum button or MD cosign
- query response is 85-95%
- still working on improving the epic query process to make it easy for MDs to find and respond to queries
Give me a call or email and glad to help!

The two go via slightly different channels. The coder queries are part of the legal medical record & are delivered to a query folder. The CDI queries use the 'staff message' function and are delivered to a different folder from the coder queries. This does cause some occasional confusion. The CDI queries are NOT part of the medical record so require entries into PN/DCS for additional documentation. We do retain these as administrative elements.
Draw backs:
* are sent to specific designated providers, so need to resend as teams turn over, etc.
* limited ability to color, format, etc. to help draw attention to and differentiate the two.
* have not yet obtained reporting capabilities (query rates, response rates, etc) from our epic system.
* reports of some physicians finding difficulty getting to the pt's medical record -- want a simple and direct one click button to open the record (not available)
* can copy plan text into body of message
Carla -- search the blog. I think there is somewhere in there (or maybe it came from Brian) a small group of folks with EPIC interest.
Try Sept 23 2009:

Pay some attention to what release version of EPIC you have -- we are a couple versions behind the most current -- and features / capabilities WILL vary!!
