physical opioid dependence F11.20

we are having an interesting discussion on physical opioid dependence.

when a patient is on chronic opioid analgesic therapy (COAT) for chronic pain management then would they also be considered to be physically opioid dependent and thus meet criteria for ICD 10 code F11.20 (a CC).

one discussion point is that the criteria for this diagnosis includes withdrawal if rapidly discontinued from the opioid and if a patient is on a long-term daily dose of the opioid then they would likely experience withdrawal,  thus they are physically opioid dependent.
