Metabolic encephalopathy with DKA?

Just wondering if you guys thought it would be appropriate to query for metabolic encephalopathy on pts with DKA? Not talking about the ones who truly have coma but ones that come in with AMS & then return to baseline once ph & other metabolic derangements improve.

Thanks,
Jeff

  • YES!  See the new coding clinic
  • Yes, I query for it. Especially if patient requires additional resources such as restraints, 1:1 sitter, etc.

  • What is the reference for the Coding Clinic?

  • The only new Coding Clinic I can find regarding Encephalopathy and Diabetes is

Is there another one re: Encephalopathy and DKA?

  • Does anyone have additional input if querying for DKA and encephalopathy is appropriate? I would think metabolic encephalopathy would be inherent to DKA, due to acidosis. Metabolic encephalopathy is temporary or permanent damage to the brain due to lack of glucose, oxygen, or other metabolic agent, or caused by organ dysfunction. Symptoms include an altered state of consciousness, usually characterized as delirium, confusion, or agitation, and changes in behavior or personality.
