CDI location

Hello, I am a new Lead CDI in a CDI department that I started 6 years ago. Our CDI department office is split in 2 areas of the hospital. We are under the Case Management Department. I am interested in knowing if anyone has their CDI specialists located on the units daily doing reviews (we have an EMR). Also if not what are your expectations of staff for rounding on the physicians.

  • We are a 238-bed children's hospital / teaching facility. Our CDI department is under Health Information Management and our offices are in the HIM department. We have 3 CDSs covering inpatient areas only, no outpatient areas. CDS covering PICU rounds 4-5 days per week in  PICU. CDS covering NICU rounds a few times per week (3 different NICU areas including small baby unit and satellite NICU). CDS covering oncology areas rounds at least 3 times per week with different heme/onc teams (liquids/solids/transplant/heme). All teams round in the AM, so CDSs are generally back in the office in the PM.

We do not round with med/surg teams, but will meet with hospitalists and surgeons as needed to discuss clarifications and provide education.

  • Jackie, Just curious about rounding because we hope to start soon...do you guys query the MD's during rounds? If so, are they verbal or do you add them to EMR, etc?

    Thanks,

  • Yes, we query verbally during rounds and document in our software. If MD agrees, we make sure that they update the diagnosis list and/or address in their progress note. Because we are a teaching hospital, we do a lot of education with the residents and fellows and so far feedback has been very positive.

  • Hi Jeff, we round and query the MD right then and there, and then add it to our CDI program ALL Scripts for tracking purposes as a verbal.

  • We have 9 CDS that have been located on each unit throughout our 300 + bed hospital.  We are directly available to physicians throughout our 8-10 hour shifts.  They know where we are and how to find us, it has greatly enhanced our query response rate.  I have intensivisits come up and either clarify a question I've asked or educate me on a particular procedure done, it's a great give and take way to work.  We have recently relocated most of our CDS to working from home due to popular demand, we will be watching our numbers closely to see how this affects our relationships and response rate.
