Coder presentation

Our CDI program is new to our facility. The CDI team is giving a presentation to the facility's coders next week to explain what CDI is, the process, etc. Does anyone have info they are willing to share such as power point, hadnouts, etc? Thank you in advance.

I think it would be easy to explain to coders what we do as CDIS, the most important issue is the communications, how our work related and affected to each other, just a thought.

    thanks

The most helpful thing I can suggest is to make sure they are aware of:

    - the focus of your dept.. whether quality or financial - they need to
understand what you are looking for in the chart

    - make sure they are aware of the types of questions you are asking -
they need to know you are not restricted by the same regulations they
are--- side note: educate yourselves on the coding process so you can see
how different yet similar you are.

    - do everything possible to keep communications flowing, this is the
crucial time for you.... they are a wealth of information and should be
involved. If you lose the coding support now, it is not easy to regain

    - it has taken me 4 years, and multiple coding classes to fully understand
how coders work, how they are regulated, and their frustrations. So many
programs have a strained relationship with the coding world. It is not a
clinically based focus in medical records, what may seem obvious to you is
    not to them.

Good Luck! Feel free to email with any questions!

I presented the data that I showed the physicians and stated the goal is
to improve documentation and not be a auditor of their coding. You want
to work as a team to assist each other in improving the information which
will in turn help them in coding by having less issues and less queries.
This is key to creating a great working relationship, I walked into a
program that the coders were already on the defense and it is hard to move
    past that!!!
