EBUS -- Bronchoscopy with biopsy utilizing " Station" designation instead of the term Lymph node

Our Pulmonologists are now documenting their Bronchoscopy with FNA  designated to Station type:  ie Station R4 or Station 7 for example; and,  want us to recognize this as a lymph node.  Can we legally code this by " Assuming" this to a transbronchial biopsy of a lymph node, thoracic?

Thanks Diane

  • We have been coding according to station. I have been researching trying to find a concrete answer to your question and have been unable to do so. I have also correlated station with the specimen sent to pathology which usually indicates lymphatic tissue.

  • Thank you for your input.  Our Pulmonologists inform us that this is anatomically correct to utilize station as meaning lymph node because it means nothing else.  So, if it's ok, then we'll code it to Lymph node for now until we have something more concrete.  We're meeting with the MDs to try to get them to be more detailed by stating lymph node so we're not a target for denial.
