Our department has been reviewing death cases and the final DRGs.  We have learned that entering shock, any type, as an MCC in a record of an expired patient changes the DRG back to the DRG without an MCC.  Is there some coding guideline that causes us to lose the shock MCC in an expired patient?  Thanks for your help.  LKS

yes, there are MCC exclusions for certain MCC's in expired patients. There is a MCC exclusion list from AHIMA. They used to include this info in the coding book but the newer books have a link in the back to access and download the list.
