CDI Performance Improvement Indicators

Hi All,

We are trying to find new indicators to tract for our performance improvement. We are currently tracking queries issued prior to discharge (to ensure queries are being issued in a timely manner) and queries answered within 24 hours. Does anybody have any other indicators you are tracking and would be willing to share?

  • Hello,

We currently capture query rates by department/specialty and physician. We look at % of queries answered within the allotted time and look for trends in disagrees. We also track CDI specific data for our CDS team such as query and review rates.

  • Deanna, How do you define disagree? I know everyone has a different definition and it's something we don't even track at the moment.

  • Hi Jeff,

In the past, our program looked at % of queries disagreed by the provider as a CDS reported metric, however this is kind of an obscure metric and can often not be impacted by the CDS. We currently look at disagrees by departments in order to watch for trends. We recently started escalating any queries disagreed on by a resident for secondary review to staff. Disagreed queries include those queries where the CDI felt that there was a possible pertinent diagnosis missing from the documentation (due to lab values, treatment, etc) and the provider disagreed in regards to a relevant need for diagnosis. We also use this outcome when providers disagree with malnutrition specificity as indicated by our RD assessment using aspen criteria. This being said, disagree data is still pulled for CDS metrics in an attempt to watch for trends that direction as well.  Does this answer your question?

  • Yes, That makes perfect sense. We just have never used that metric, but I might use it like you do to trend departmental disagreements.

    Thanks,

    Jeff
