Best Practice for "Counting" queries

I have found that different CDI in my department are "counting" queries differently. One will place a written query and then follow up with a verbal reminder to the MD and count that as one query, while another will count the written as one and the verbal follow up as a second query. We need to get every CDI following the same practice so metrics are not skewed for both the CDI productivity and Provider response. Can anyone recommend best practice or share their policy? Thank you!

  • We would count one query no matter how many times we connect with the provider.

  • We also would count that scenario as one query. The number is driven by the query topic such as pneumonia, CHF, etc.. not by the means of communication.

    Thank You Linda!
  • We would  count that as one query. We do track follow ups and escalations but they are not counted as new events.

  • We also count it as one query.

  • Only one query in the scenario you describe.  Best practice is BOTH a verbal and a written communication.  Now if the CDI Specialist needs to query for an additional condition, then they could/should get credit for that query as well.

  • Only one query for our department.  The CDI is responsible for following up on unanswered queries and communicating with the MD.
  • In counting your queries, if Nursing has not documented the pt's BMI and the CDI calls the floor to ask the nurse to document the BMI - should the CDI post a query for that call if it results in the CDI being able to then query for Obesity or Malnutrition in the absence of a Nutrition Consult ?
