Benchmarking

I notice that a lot of places don't have a consulting company and have homegrown systems in place. How do you benchmark your performance? What do you monitor and how do you report it to leadership?

Thanks

I monitor percent of admissions reviewed each month, Number of reviews done, Providers queried by area, reason for query, query response and how the provider responded, and impact of the query on coding.

My metric targets are based on what I've seen people use here. For example a target of 80% of all admissions reviewed, a clarification rate of 35% or less, a positive response rate of 80% or more, and a positive impact on coding of 40% or more.

I report monthly to the medical record review committee.

    Hope this helps.

    Robert,
This may have been discussed already, but do you just keep up with the data in an excel spreadsheet or have a system in place that pulls the data for you? We are trying to figure out what will work best for us and could use any pointers. Thanks.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and the wisdom to know the difference.
  • Actually I put my data into an access database as I enter in queries, working DRG's, and such. I then have reports and queries set up to run so I can get my monthly metrics for reporting. It's all home grown, but there are plans afoot to change the queries to a different system at the national level for the VA which means I'd start running my reports out of there and would actually end up being able to pull query response rates by provider and query type. Something I don't do now.

I hope this helps in some way. If you have other questions just shoot me a direct email.
