CMI expected GMLOS

Hi,
I was asked by the VP of Financial Operations what our expected GMLOS would be based on our CMI. Is there a table for this?

    Table 5 of each year's IPPS final rule includes the GMLOS for each MS-DRG.  You can identify an "expected GMLOS" by comparing each patient's MS-DRG LOS with the expected to derive an overall average. That could be evaluated monthly by applying the formula to a list of final MS-DRGs.

    Of course, that value is only as accurate as the MS-DRG.  If the hospital's ALOS is greater than the DRG GMLOS, further evaluate would be needed to determine how much of the discrepancy is attributed to documentation opportunity.
