Combined Admissions
Dear collegues,
When the external physician advisor, for example EHR, combines 2 separate inpt stays and there is a MCC from the second stay, can we code it as a MCC with the initial stay's DRG.
Example: Pt had pacemaker first stay with no MCC. Came back in 3 days later with pneumonia and EHR combined. Can we use the Pneumonia as a MCC to go from DRG 244 to 242?
Thanks for the feedback,

Comments
I have not combined two inpt stays for several years, but as I recall, if there is a cc and/or MCC on the other stay it may be used on the combined inpatient stay.
