subsequent encounter of patient with MI within 4 weeks

HI,

My question is in coding an sdx of MI within 4 weeks, this encounter was for TAVR and patient had and acute on chronic systolic HF, is the MI < 4 weeks able to be coded in this subsequent encounter?

Coding Clinic, 4th Qtr 2016 Pg 140………”continue to code from category I21 as the patient is within four weeks of the initial MI.”

Thank you,

  • Sheri,

It depends on the type of MI.  Subsequent MI ICD 10 codes are only used for type I MI's status post Oct 1 2018.  If the patient had two Type I MI's within 4 weeks I do not see why you would not code as directed by the guidelines.   For subsequent type II MI's, you just code a Type II (not the subsequent MI code).

I highly recommend you read the new 2018 official coding guidelines on MI as there is even more changes there than what we are discussing.
