DVT vs PE which DRG

Hello ACDIS Community-

Question to the industry: patient presented with SOB noted to have a PE and after further study also found to have a DVT. The practitioner notes the cause of the PE is the DVT. With both treated equally through the hospitalization which PDX do you sequence 1st, PE or DVT?  Do you often admit for a DVT only?

This is a current discussion topic within my organization and I am hoping gain an understanding of what other facilities currrent practice is.I understand this is not a black and white decision and I am only looking for your thoughts on if the link/cause or a query for the link/cause, is well documented which do you sequence first-DVT or PE?
If anyone has a best practice or policy I would appreciate the share.
Have a great day!

  • In my opinion, the PE should be the principle diagnosis as it was the condition resulting in admission- dyspnea, (maybe) hypoxia, etc.
The DVT potentially could have been treated as an outpatient depending upon circumstances.
