Is Post-operative anemia a complication or a PSI ? Does it negatively impact hospital or surgeon?
In the past (pre ICD-10) it was my understanding that “Acute blood loss anemia” was NOT classified as a complication of surgery and did not adversely affect a surgeon’s complication rates or quality scores or the hospital's either, but "post-op blood loss anemia" could be coded as a complication ( post-op hemorrhage). Does anyone know if this is currently the case? I am getting concerns from orthopedic surgeons and administration that it will negatively impact them if they answer my ABLA query. Would it cause a PSI 10 or other complication to be coded or show up on physician profiling? Thank you to anyone who can help!!

Post op blood loss anemia codes to D62 acute posthemorrhagic anemia. It is not a complication unless the surgeon states it is.
As far as PSI, I think you mean PSI 9 (PSI 10 is postop AKI requiring dialysis)? That code is not on the inclusion list.
