Spinal Fusions
Hello all!
As my personal goal for this upcoming year I have been signed up to make a PowerPoint on coding Spinal Fusions and present it as education. This is a topic I mismatch about 90% of the time. I have read the Coding Clinics and researched information online. However, I still can't wrap my head around the proper way to distinguish and code the fusions (approach, column, combined, etc). I feel the operative reports are overwhelming and makes it difficult for me to key in on the important information. Are there any resources, topics, explanations, tips, etc. that can assist me in this task at hand?!
Thank you,
Morgan

Spine-health.com has great fusion videos. Coding Clinic, Fourth Quarter 2010 Pages: 125-129 outlines posterior structures of the spine as: pedicle, lamina, facet, transverse process, or "gutter" fusion. If bone is packed at any of these sites, this supports coding a posterior column fusion and has DRG impact if an anterior column fusion is done as well. An anterior column fusion is done when part or all of the disc is removed to make room for a device. CC4Q05p122-123 contains more helpful info.
