Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome

Good morning!  Hoping that maybe you might be able to help me in capturing the P96.1 Neonatal abstinence syndrome and getting the appropriate APR-DRG assignment.  We get a lot of transfers from other hospitals of neonates with neonatal abstinence syndrome.  If the neonate is 7 days or less, it groups to APR DRG 639 Neonate with other significant conditions (assuming that it's a full term/normal weight neonate).  However, if the neonate is 8 days or older, it will group to APR DRG 776 Other drug abuse and dependence.

It doesn't seem appropriate to place these neonates into APR DRG 776.  They traditionally have a long length of stay.  Do your facility use P96.1 neonatal abstinence syndrome as the principal diagnosis or do you use the physical symptom that is being treated, i.e., seizure, feeding problems, respiratory failure/distress, diarrhea, etc?

Any help would be appreciated.
