acute kidney injury vs acute kidney insufficiency
When a provider documents AKI can CDI assume it is referencing acute kidney injury or is a query necessary to differentiate for acute kidney injury vs acute kidney insufficiency? Referencing the 2020 ACDIS pocket guide MDC 11 Pg 275-280 I do not see information regarding acute kidney insufficiency. A DRG coordinator in our facility has instructed our staff to clarify between the two. I am looking for guidance/ coding requirements and or evidence based research to support the practice.
Thank you.

It is an abbreviation that can be interpreted to mean either 'insufficiency' or 'injury' and these are not the same conditions and each has a separate code; as such, we query when the term is AKI is charted, and we use KDIGO as our clinical reference.
My personal observation (anecdotal) is that a 'good many' times when the term AKI is charted, KDIGO is NOT met.
I don't have the ACDIS Pocket Guide, so I can't speak to that at all.
I hope this is helpful.
