ICD-10 coding for CHF

Our providers use the NY Heart Association Classification of Heart Failure (1,2,3,4) but the coding book uses The American College of Cardiology and AHA Classification (A,B,C,D).  If my provider describes the CHF as stage 4, am I allowed to cross that over to stage D and code end stage CHF?
Thanks!

  • Hi, I do cardiology at our facility and our providers also use the NYHA/ACC classifications. There are differences between the two. One of our MDs described it as the NYHA classification is symptom based and is fluid--in other words, a patient can come in as class IV but leave as class II. But ACC stages are more based on the structure of the heart--and not really fluid. If that makes sense.

So, no, we don't cross over between the 2. They normally chart both, or I query for the stage to be able to code end-stage. Hope that helps
