Cellulitis due to IV drug use

Question: in a discussion with coding, we are unsure if a cellulitis/sepsis due to an IV drug would be codes with a PDX of T8029XA: infection following other infusion, transfusion and therapeutic injection, initial encounter.

My initial thought was that the drug use obviously isn't 'therapeutic', but we do code as a complication/infection those who self-cath at home with a urinary catheter, then develop a urinary infection.

Can you provide guidance? Is there a specific code for infections due to self-injections?

Thank you

Hi!! I personally would not apply the T code cause because the infection was not related to a medical treatment.

T80-T88 are grouped as "Complications of surgical and medical care, not elsewhere classified"
