CDI Presentation

I have to give my first presentation as a CDIS to the nurse managers. Does anyone have any content ideas, graphics, clip art, etc.. that they would suggest or share? I am having a writers block right now and can use some assistance. Thank you!

Curious as to what your topic is? Are you doing an overview or are you going to be reviewing nursing documentation also?

Would suggest that you start simple with the very basic basics. I gave a presentation to our residents and one of the first things they asked me was what a DRG was.

Just an overview on what CDI is and what we do. Most of the nursing mangers have never heard of this position. We have 15mins to present.

You will probably need to mention what medical necessity is and why establishing this with supportive documentation is important. The ICU especially was glad to hear that I was ensuring the documentation supported the care the nursing staff was providing (meds, gtts, lines, etc). Validates the work they do in the higher level of care area. They also were appreciative of having the record complete when it got to coding so that the chart could be coded and then filed quickly instead of sitting in a bucket or stack somewhere in medical records. This to them meant the chart was where they could locate it if the patient returned and the old record was needed.

I agree, an overview with a focus on severity of illness, risk of mortality capture and how nursing documentation can provide clues to find some of this information to ensure that resources are being used appropriately. Most nurse managers don't care about a DRG, but they do care about resource utilization.

I'd also put in a bit about how the greater specificity can enhance continuity of care and provider better patient outcomes.

  • When I was a new CDI I went to the nursing department meetings and they each allocated me 10 minutes to present "an intro to CDI".

What I learned is that the whole time they were waiting for me to address one thing and were not really paying ANY attention to what I was saying, instead they were listening for the one thing that they were most concerned with...

Thanks for that great tip! I didn’t even think of that!

I know I'm taking notes. That is a great tip, but I still tell them that nursing documentation is very important since they see the patient and will document things that providers don't.

I attend the unit meetings occasionally for all our floors. I think all of us in health care feel the financial pressures. I review inpatient and outpatient reimbursement with the nursing staff, how the case mix index is obtained from the DRGs, length of stay (no, the case managers aren't making those numbers up:) and some POA documentation examples. I think that when we understand how we are compensated financially, we can be better stewards of resources for both our patients and hospital. My goal is to educate our staff to make the best decisions after having information.

  • We developed a powerpoint presentation that we used for our 15 min nurse manager CDI education but the file is too large to attach here. If you can give me your e-mail address I'll be glad to try to send to you.

Any chance this could be put on the ACDIS forms/tools since everyone is
    very interested in it?

  • edited May 2016
This happens often with a generous colleague willing to share something and then getting inundated with individual requests. I know sometimes we make the connection to getting the subject matter into the Forms & Tools Library at ACDIS. Is there any to intervene earlier and save all of the "me too's"?!! Thanks

The person did state in their posting that people were to send a private mail to her Yahoo account. Maybe most who responded here did not get that far in her message, hence the large amounts of "me too" traffic here?!?

    I would also be interested.

I have to say that the information Janice gave me was very helpful!
I have another thing, I was asked to attend one of the surgical committee meeting to talk about the post op complications, how to document to avoid unnecessary post op complication code. I would like to have some suggestions from everyone here, thanks in advance!

  • Hi everyone, Janice's powerpoint has now been posted in the forms and tools library, here: http://www.hcpro.com/acdis/forms_tools_group.cfm?topic=WS_ACD_LIB_PEM. You can download it there. Thanks Janice!
