Getting started in CDI seems like a pipe dream

Has anyone had success starting in CDI without previous CDI experience? Seems impossible. I have a friend that has worked for two large health systems that have hired RNs without the background requirements I see in every application. She and physicians I work with encourage me to apply. I joined ACDIS, listen the podcast, read the journals, obtained apprenticeship and in doing those things feel very encouraged that it is possible to start in this field. However, every application requires previous CDI experience in addition to recent acute care in ICU or ER. I apply regardless and nothing but rejection. I have been a nurse for 20 years, last 7 in oncology. I have even tried networking with the local chapter and received zero response. This chapter also has no current information or updates, so I am not sure if it is active. I reached out to current health system CDI manager to request a job shadow opportunity and was advised next time a position opens I can job shadow, which was confusing to me. Any advice before I completely give up on something I have a passionate interest in and have invested money and time into? I encourage direct and honest responses please.
