Daily Labs

At several of the presentations at the 2025 ACDIS Conference it was shared that routine daily labs are really no longer considered appropriate clinical indicators to support a query. Using daily labs as "monitoring or evaluation" of a diagnosis to meet the definition of a reportable secondary diagnosis.

exp. Patient admitted for simple PNA w/o CC or MCC. Two+ day LOS. CDI left a retrospective query for hyponatremia with daily lab results of 131-134-135. The daily lab results considered to be "monitoring or evaluation" to meet the definition of a secondary diganosis. The pt was given a 1L Fluid Bolus which was ordered and initiated 20min prior to first labs being made available. It was felt the fluid bolus would support as "treatment and nursing care" despite being ordered and initiated prior to lab results.
