Basic coder training

I am being asked to investigate options for me to receive training / take classes to enhance my CDS position. Other than the HCPRO boot camps, does anyone know of other alternatives to getting inpatient coder training?

I have looked into local college classes, but they seem to be geared more towards the HIM/RHIT arena.

Thanks.

A local college here offers a Coding Certificate. Another CDIS and myself will start this process in Aug. It takes a year to complete but since we are both RNs we do not need all the classes.

I was looking into the same thing and I have been told to search the AHIMA website for classes that would prepare me for taking the CCS (certified Coding Specialist) exam. The RHIT (associate's degree) will include outpatient, other medical records stuff that we probably won't need as CDIS. If you send me your email, I will give you what I have so far.

AHIMA and AAPC and HcPRO offer eLearning courses.

Make sure you focus on Inpatient ICD-9 courses. They are more what a CDS needs to learn. (at this time) Our local college offers "coding classes" but they are geared more for Physician Office billing or Outpatient services.

You don't want to shell out $$$ and it not be something you need.
