2011 CDI Pocket Guide

Has anyone had any experience using the 2011 CDI Pocket Guide (Dr Pinson & C Tang)? I seem to remember seeing something on cdi-talk about it, but cannot find it searching. Just wondering if anyone found it a useful reference.

  • I have it (bought it myself)~ I like it. Key References section is the
    part I use the most!

  • If you can not find it on the web site for ACDIS, then try Amazon.
They usually have most books you are looking for.
    I enjoy using this book.

Our director purchased one for each of us. They are a wonderful resource for us as CDI's, but an even better resource to use for Physician education. We are unit-based, and have a lot of 1:1 opportunities.
When we purchased ours they were available to ACDIS members at a discounted rate.

I had purchased a copy and passed it around with my team (9 total).
The majority (with CDI experience 3-5 years) observed very nice book, likely would not use every day, but easily would have used daily during their first couple of years.
The minority opinion (mostly 3 yrs or less experience) felt they would use frequently -- both for themselves as well as with casual physician conversations.

My opinion -- this fills the niche for a large need: a truly portable reference that is reasonably complete and very handy. Won't take the place for a much more comprehensive resource (at present some consulting companies supply this need, but embedded in software and does not 'belong' to the individual and in fact disappears if licensing costs are not maintained -- off the top of my head is the JATA & 3M software reference materials, perhaps others?).

I have talked with customer service (Al Occhipinti AOcchipinti@hcpro.com) and there is a discount rate for bulk purchase.

I am going to be ordering a copy for each of my team as well as physician advisor

Do question whether there will be a value in purchase a copy annually -- sure in part depends on what changes there are annually from CMS. Would think that hand-editing our copies would be enough some years. Will have to see on that point.

We have been using HCareQ pocket guides from day one. Before they even became available through HcPro. We love them! Excellent resource- I especially like them for formulating queries.

  • I have used the 2010 and 2011 Pocket Guide. Having the 2010 prompted my current manager, when she saw it, to want to order the current year's edition. I have mine, physician champion, case managers, chief resident, and hospitalists all received a copy this time around.
