Credentials

Good Morning -

I need some advice... Our facility has two RNs working in the CDIS roles. Our hospital policy states if an employee has a certification, the credentials can be displayed on their name badge if their current position reflects their classification, ie they can have RN or LVN on their name badge if they are working on the floor. The RN's in CDI feel they would have a better working relationship with the physicians as well as the nurses on the units if their credentials were displayed on their name badge. I agree with the RN's and would to have this policy changed or somehow prove that they are still in a nursing role due to the clinical review they are conducting.

Does anyone have any ideas???

I have a large blue badge I wear at work that says "RN" just like all
the other RN's in addition to my regular ID. Why wouldn't you put the
    credentials on their name badge?

Our facility says that no matter what capacity an RN or LVN is working, the credential is to be listed. I think it does help for the unit staff and physicians to know what your credentials are whether it is RN/LVN or RHIT/RHIA. Besides whatever your credential, you earned it and should be allowed to display that. Because no matter what your job, you may be able to help someone with a question be they unit staff, physician, patient or visitor.

  • My badge has my name followed by RN and says" Clinical Documentation",
with " Registered Nurse" just below that. I agree to keep their
credentials on the badge! Aren't they still "working on the floor" by
conducting (paper)chart reviews on the floor and interacting with
physicians on the floor or is the policy due to non-patient care role?
Aren't they required to renew their nursing license like patient care
nurses? What about other departments that use nurses in non-patient care
role~ are they also not allowed to have their credentials displayed on
the badge? Do the nurse managers of the floors have their credentials on
    their badge?

We need a LIKE button like on FB!
  • As far as nurses.... The managers, supervisors, and direct patient care have their credentials on their name badges. I am not sure why the policy is written that way and I can not get an answer about it. I was hoping there would be something in the "nursing bylaws" or something that would support having credentials displayed.

By the way, I actually have a RHIT with a BS in HIM - but nothing on my badge either.

I had my own name plate/badge made with all my credentials and wear it on my lab jacket in addition to my employee badge. I have had my RHIA on my employee badge in the past, however they are now using a different badge and my credentials do not fit.

This is also present in my workplace. Did I not go to nursing school and submit myself to the rigors of getting this credential just as much as my colleagues that assist patients at the bedside? My workplace will not give me an RN badge to wear with my employee badge though my job descriptions states that I must renew my nursing license each year. Many other non-bedside nurses have the RN badge (Managers, Administrators, QM, Information Technology, etc), so I am not sure of the stigma. Is this an issue that relates to where the CDI program is managed?(HIM managed vs Nursing managed)

Our job title is RN-Clinical Documentation Specialist and this is on our name badge. I think this is probably something to have a conversation with your manager and Human Resources and maybe even Nursing services about.
