PEA

A patient was here for an outpatient surgical procedure. When he was turned prone onto the surgical table he became cyanotic from the waist down, hypotensive, and pulseless. The patient was removed from the table and placed on his back and all symptoms resolved. The patient was admitted for a workup and no cause was found. There is question of a possible vasovagal response to the induction of anesthesia. Everything was ruled out through the course of the hospital stay.

There is no ICD-9 code for PEA that we can find and currently the PDX is "PEA".

Can anyone give any assistance to how this should be coded?

Thanks!

    Using the encoder:

    Arrhythmia
    Vagal
    ---> 780.2 syncope and collapse

  • I would take it to cardiac arrest. PEA is not a vagal arrhythmia. We used to call it EMD--electromechanical dissociation, because there is no myocardial work although the monitor shows a rhythm.
