RE: cdi_talk digest: July 20, 2011

I was taught 10 years ago that if the principal reason for admission is cardiac, and the patient has an AMI, the AMI is PDx regardless if it is POA or not. That is a coding rule I believe, but I regret I haven't the time to hunt it down for you. Perhaps one of our coding colleagues here could help me out with the Coding Clinic or manual reference?

Does anyone know of a course that is ICD-10 based but is focused on specific documentaton issues. Most of what I have seen out there is focused on the coding aspect. Recognizing that it is important to have an ICD-10 coding basis, it is also important to understand what areas will have the most documentation concerns--disease and service focused.

If you know of anything out there, please let me know.

I've seen a book offered titled "The CDI Specialist Guide to ICD-10" from HCPro, but haven't reviewed it or purchased it yet. I haven't seen a particular course offering yet either.

  • The AMI doesn't become the PDx - it only determines the DRG. The PDx remains the same.

In other words, it just gets to be the bus driver (DRG designator) not the #1 passenger (PDx). And it can't be the driver and a passenger at the same time. You can't pick, either. It will ALWAYS be the DRG driver.
