Right sided heart failure

edited May 2016 in CDI Talk Archive
I have a cardiologist ready to lop off my head if I put one more query for systolic/diastolic/combined CHF on one of his charts. He claims that patients in right sided heart failure cannot be classified as systolic or diastolic. Are you aware of any physician/cardiology references or articles which would help to support our claim? I went through the CDI Talk archives in addition to looking for other references and coming up empty. (Right now he wants me to take his plea to Medicare to get it changed :) )

  • Dr Gold gave an excellent audio conference on heart failure some time ago. He specifically stated in that audioconference that the codes for systolic and diastolic heart failure only applied to left sided heart failure.
I thought, but I will have to check, that there are guidelines for this. I will have to check next week.
We do not query, at our facility, for systolic or diastolic on R heart failure. Our cardiologists have stated that the ICD9 coded for systolic and diastolic do not apply to r sided failure.
