Coding Clinic and ICD-10

At the present time there are no plans to convert (or crosswalk) the several existing years of Coding Clinic for ICD-9 CM to ICD-10 CM - in other words, what we are using now for coding/documentation advice will "disappear" come October 1, 2013. It will no longer be applicable or appropriate to reference when coding in ICD-10.

Coding Clinic for ICD-10 will start "fresh" in 2013 - which of course will pose lots of questions from coders and CDS who struggle with how to code or what documentation is needed.

You can read a little more about this in a blog published on HCPro's
"ICD-10 Trainer" on 7/15/2010. Here is the link:

What can you do now to prepare? The draft versions of ICD-10 CM are already available on the CDC website. Here is the link:

You can download and read the Official Coding Guidelines for ICD-10
from this site and review the differences between these and the ICD-9 guidelines.

The draft versions of the ICD-10 PCS (procedure) coding system as well as the coding guidelines are available on the CMS website at the following link:

I went to the AHIMA ICD-10 Building Expert Trainers in Diagnosis and Procedure Coding. The expectation is for me to be able to help train physicians and ancillary staff.
