No kidding right! We are a fairly small institution (relatively speaking), and our CDI program only has 3 of us (though most of the time 2-considering vacations, maternity leave ect)...so I cannot imagine being the ONLY ONE! Wow! Can I ask, is your hospital really that small or have they just not caught up with the importance of your position?
In the 2 years I have been a CDS (having been an Ortho Neuro Surgical Nurse), we have grown leaps and bounds in terms of policies and procedures. You could say we have gone from being MOTEL 6 to a HYATT REGENCY:). When I started we had only "paper" worksheets, and our query process was comedic-we generally stuck to about 3 things we would query for-the obvious CHF, Anemia and POA. Recently, we hired and independent consultant group-and now have all computerized worksheets! The consultant does bi-annual audits for our areas of increased focus. Our queries and response rates have gone up about 150% that alone is worth what we beat our heads up against daily regarding the physician aspect of our positions! Recently we have re-written the query policy and have written 18 standard queries (one generic) and are making our queries a PERMANENT part of the medical record! All this, in the last year alone. My next step is to get certified as a CCDS!
Kudos to you for being your own support system-though I hope at some point you get another CDS so at the very least you have some-one to bounce ideas off of-that alone makes my job easier! If you ever need anything, let me know and I will be glad to tell you what we do-or ideas to share! Keep your chin up!
