DRG 685 Admit for renal dialysis

There is a new DRG 685. Can anyone tell me when to use this DRG? We have a case that is clearly documented that pt was sent to ER because he missed two HD sessions due to mishap with transfer papers. Would we use this DRG in this case? Thank you in advnace for your input.

DRG 685 is not a new DRG.
It is the DRG assigned when the principal dx is V56.*.
V56.* is assigned as the principal dx when a patient is admitted SOLELY for dialysis or for fitting and adjustment of dialysis catheters.
When there is a complication or noncompliance, the complication or result of noncompliance is generally the principal dx. See CC 2nd Qtr 2001 and 3rd QTR 2007 for more information.

The following is a 3M Nosology Help Message re DRG 685
DRG 685 - Admit for renal dialysis
This DRG is reserved for principal diagnosis of Admission for Renal Dialysis (V56x) only. If any complicating conditions are the reason for admission, even though dialysis may be given, then the condition that occasioned the admission should be principal and not V56x.

In the example you cited, the principal dx would depend on if the patient had any complications that were due to missing the dialysis.
