Are you valued? Is your program valued?

As a clinical documentation improvement specialist do you feel valued by Administration as a contributing member of your organization? Do you feel that Administration has full buy in of your CDI Program?

I feel I am valued by administration for what I do, but I don't have the needed support and program promotion that I feel only administration can provide to the medical staff.

YES, YES and YES. We have an extremely supportive administration. The CFO
was one of the people actively involved from the beginning to implement
the program. Our CEO came from another facility with a very successful
program. Therefore I have not had to sell the program but had the
    challenge of meeting the expectations.

I feel I have support, but mostly because this was top driven and I've spent time getting to know the medical staff. Of course there is a lot of confusion about what people think I do or should do, but that's what education is all about.

As a cdis I do not feel valued, partly due to the fact that I don't have
an established niche. I am, first and fore most a RN ..... I feel that our
facility does not recognize non- direct patient care nurses. I hear often
enough as to how much they appreciate the increased revenue, but I don't
believe the understand how patient care is impacted .... and yes I do try
to tell them! I don't believe there will be full but in until there is
    full understanding and appreciation.

I have to agree with you on this point Susan. I fall into the
"consultant" pocket for RN's in the VA, but I don't have any
non-clinical peers on the professional standards board so I get passed
up for promotions and such. Also, since I don't fall under patient care
services, impacts things too. Some of our UR nurses here have shared
    similar concerns with me.

  • Yes, I do feel that our CDI staff is appreciated by administration.

My team was denied access to funds that were donated to our facility with
the express purpose of nurse education, based on the fact that our CNO
would prefer that money go to bedside nurses and we do not qualify for
clinical ladder. Yet, we have just as much if not more impact on quality
of nursing in our facility. Sorry I just get frustrated when I here of so
many CDIS's not staying in their positions, and feel that this is a part
    of their dissatisfaction.

  • I notice you are a consultant. May I ask what will you be doing with the answers that we all provide. Are you looking for something specific.

I've always scratched my head a bit when I hear this question. If the organization didn't feel a dept was contributing, it would be phased out-especially in the current economy. However, the nationwide trend is to expand CDI programs. In our facility, we were able to add an FTE in an economic climate where FTE's are being decreased throughout our network.

  • I have the same question as Deb, considering that Devon left a voice mail on my work number the other day, trying to recruit. I wanted to ask her where she got my name and number, but I guess the answer is obvious now. :(

  • We participate on many public forums like this, we are asked by our clients about how other programs are doing in the CDI world. The answers are for internal market research to see what other professionals are experiencing. We will not be using any information in a public format.

    Sincerely,

    Devon

Are you the same Devon who has been calling my staff trying to recruit?

Hi everyone, this is Brian. I have spoken to Devon off-line about the purpose of CDI Talk, which is strictly for non-commercial purposes. I will continue to monitor the situation.
