Reporting to department
Hello. I was reading through some older posts associated with the different departments that CDI report to. I was curious as to the benefits associated with reporting to the various departments. I would appreciate any input. Thanks!

I see no benefit to being under nursing

I feel there has been a real value in being with HIMS, as that seems to have been a significant factor with improving the collaboration with our coders, as well as opened up some great opportunities for learning and exchange. Also seeing benefit with process improvements we have recently been able to implement. A greater natural alignment of interests and focus, less of the feeling of being 'orphaned' within the reporting change, however, since we are nurses (factors of the market, not specific choice) we are isolated from the general nursing areas of interest -- but tolerable.
The other area I suspect is of advantage to some facilities is either being in quality or reporting to a Physician leader (directly or indirectly). With quality, seems to help with the perception of the focus of the CDI program -- money vs quality. With a physician, naturally gives a bit of an advantage in communication with medical staff.
Take a look at several of the bench marking reports you can find under various ACDIS Quarterly Journal entries & several white papers (Oct 2010 -- White Paper: What Every CDI Program Needs to Succeed is Structure, Staff, Process; July 2010 -- Survey shows structure of healthcare documentation improvement programs; April 2009 -- White paper: Roll out an engaging CDI program; Jan 2009 -- White paper: Instill a culture of quality to ensure CDI success)
