Average LOS

I have been asked to obtain information regarding the average length of stay across the country for specific DRGs. Does anyone know where I can locate this information or if it is even possible? Thank you for any help you can provide!

  • We have a list off all DRG's by MS-DRG, final rule, MDC, type, DRG title, weight, and geometric mean/arithmetic mean (LOS). Originally we got it from our coders from the federal registry? Then our consultant from 3M gave us a copy of the same list. It is a great tool. I have a copy in paper form, am looking for the email copy and will send it if I find it. Hopefully someone out there has it in email form????
    Good Luck,

  • Amy,

Thanks for your help. I am not sure what I was thinking....must be all the snow we had this weekend that fogged up my brain but the ALOS gives me this exact information. I actually already have this data in one of my codebooks that we get from our vendor. Thanks again!

  • We receive an updated Medicare DRG Table from our Accounting Department every October. It's in Excel spreadsheet format and includes each MS-DRG w/Title, whether or not it is a Post Acute DRG, the MDC, whether it is a medical or surgical DRG, the relative weights, the GMLOS, the AMLOS, and the expected reimbursement.

(resending, attached file must have prevented it from going through)

I think the exact information you are looking for is found in Table 7B of the final rule from CMS.
Provides national volume of cases in each MS-DRG, Arithmetic mean LOS, as well as LOS for the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th 90th percentiles.

I've attempted to attach (apparently the file was too large -- try this link http://www.cms.gov/AcuteInpatientPPS/FR2012/list.asp#TopOfPage).
7a is the V28 grouper, 7b is the V29 grouper.
