Anyone have any ideas for the dx code for abnormal thirst response and need for supplemental fluids... peds patient is getting a gastrostomy tube placed. Any suggestions would be great. Having trouble setting my drg without a pdx:)

Does this patient have symptoms of dehydration? If so, ask MD if that
would be an appropriate consideration for documentation in the record.

  • googled disease with abnormal thirst and came up with:
    Diabetes Mellitus
    Diabetes Insipidus
    Primary Hyperaldosteronism
    Sepsis
    Psychogenic Polydipsia

if any of those seem appropriate you could list the clinical indicators, reasonable clinical options including "unspecified or other more appropriate diagnosis"

Or simply a "Diagnosis occasioning the admission" query.

Excessive thirst is polydipsia which codes to 783.5

The 3M encoder takes you to polydipsis if you enter thirst.

The underlying cause would be principal if it is known.
