HIV-pancytopenia

We are a small hospital and do not have a lot admissions for HIV. Would you query for pancytopenia or is this integral to HIV?

Thanks in advance for helping me out.

  • Hi Kwilliams,

I would query and utilize two-step query format to clarify the condition and cause of pancytopenia (check to see if the patient is on any medication that can induce bone marrow toxicity)

Keep in mind pancytopenia is not on the CDC list for AIDS-defining illnesses, I wouldn’t ask for a link to HIV or assume it is integral.

I will share my system when coding HIV/AIDS

    The Acronym – DHS

    DISEASE, HISTORY, STATUS

    ·        DISEASE - HIV infection, symptomatic SAME as AIDS (B20)

A diagnosis of AIDS requires an AIDS-defining condition or a CD4 count of less than 200

    ·        HISTORY - Patient has a previous diagnosed HIV-related illness? If it is documented as such patient has AIDS (B20)

    ·        STATUS - asymptomatic human immunodeficiency virus [HIV] infection status (Z21)
