acute kidney injury vs acute kidney insufficiency

When a provider documents AKI can CDI assume it is referencing acute kidney injury or is a query necessary to differentiate  for acute kidney injury vs acute kidney insufficiency?  Referencing the 2020 ACDIS pocket guide MDC 11 Pg 275-280 I do not see information regarding acute kidney insufficiency.  A DRG coordinator in our facility has instructed our staff to clarify between the two. I am looking for guidance/ coding requirements and or evidence based research to support the practice.
Thank you.

  • It is an abbreviation that can be interpreted to mean either 'insufficiency' or 'injury' and these are not the same conditions and each has a separate code; as such, we query when the term is AKI is charted, and we use KDIGO as our clinical reference.

My personal observation (anecdotal) is that a 'good many' times when the term AKI is charted, KDIGO is NOT met.

I don't have the ACDIS Pocket Guide, so I can't speak to that at all.

    I hope this is helpful.
