acute blood loss

When "acute anemia due to gi blood loss" is documented, does the acute apply to the blood loss or just to the anemia? Do I have to query :( I don't want to query. What do you think? Thanks Martha

I would be o.k. coding ABLA.

I would say just the anemia. I would query for clarification.

  • I would take that as sufficient. That doesn’t mean the coders would though....

Interested in hearing others opinions on this.

If you run it through the encoder:
    GI hemorrhage
Unspecified, with blood loss anemia --> acute --> 285.1

  • The term 'acute' would be applied only to the anemia in the scenario you offered.

  • When we received training by consulting group in 2008, we were told to code as ABLA if documented any of these ways: anemia d/t acute gi bleed, acute gi bleed with anemia, or acute anemia d/t gi bleed.
