Cardiogenic shock post CABG

There has been quite a bit of discussion regarding the coding of cardiogenic shock at our facility. My question is if indicators are met for Cardiogenic Shock post CABG, how is it being coded, are there any issue with Coders not wanting to code this & what , if any, issues are other CDS seeing  with this?
Our physicians are documenting postop cardiogenic shock, but in the discharge summary stating no complications.
Thoughts???

  • Suggest you find in our resources the presentation by Dr. Gold's firm from 2016,  "Coding of Complications" - great discussion in this Power Point.

  • This was presented 2016 May at our convention in Atlanta.   A search by those parameters should find this presentation for your review.

  • I would suggest you speak with your providers to confirm if they expect all patients s/p CABG to experience cardiogenic shock and clarify when or what parameters would indicate treatment over and above the expected.
